Horicon High School Athletic Complex – Horicon, WI

2022

What began as an unusable vacant field was transformed into a modern athletic complex, complete with a synthetic turf football field, an 8-lane running track, a concessions plaza, and bleacher seating for 1,000 proud Horicon School fans.

The Horicon High School community privately raised almost $3 million dollars to bring their dilapidated track & field facilities to elite status among all Wisconsin high school facilities.  Wondra Construction was involved in the design and budget stage to offer value engineering concepts to the final project design.  Wondra self-performed 100% of its scope of the project, including 74,000 cubic yards of mass earthwork, 5,000 cubic yards of marsh excavation for a DNR-approved wetland fill, and more than 8,600 linear feet of storm sewer pipe installation.  Poor soils under the proposed track & field required Wondra to place 12,000 cubic yards of surcharge on the field for five months to increase the soil compaction and consolidation process.  The clay-lined storm sewer pond encountered high ground water requiring extensive and continuous dewatering methods.  Midway through the project, the city required replacement of a 48-foot storm sewer line which crossed the project site.  Wondra was able to maintain the schedule and budget to be finished by the grand opening.  Wondra donated more than $150,000 construction services to the project.
